You’ve searched online for a used car for what seems like an eternity, you’ve visited countless dealers and maybe even some private sellers, you’ve found the perfect used car - but before you make your final decision, it’s really important that you take a test drive.

Here at Day’s Motorpark, we always recommend that our customers get behind the wheel of their chosen vehicle before making a decision - and we’re always on hand to answer any questions they may have.

But we do realise sometimes, it can be easy to get distracted or overwhelmed, so here’s a handy checklist of what to take note of the next time you test drive a used car...

  1. Before you start car, have a look underneath the engine oil cap. If there’s any sign of a thick white substance, there could be a problem with the head gasket.
  2. Is there excessive smoke when you start the car? What about when you’re driving? You can expect to see a small amount of steam or white smoke, particularly on cold days, but large amounts of  blue, black or white smoke should ring alarm bells.
  3. When you turn the wheel, is there any juddering and can you hear any squeals?
  4. When you’re driving along a level, straight stretch of road, make sure the car doesn’t pull to one side.
  5. When you brake, make sure the car stops without pulling to one side.
  6. When you use the brake, are there any vibrations or rubbing noises?
  7. When you use the handbrake, is there any slippage?
  8. Go through every gear, including reverse and make sure there is no crunching..
  9. Check the clutch biting point? If it’s near the top, you may need a new clutch soon. If you’re testing an automatic, make sure the gear changes are smooth.
  10. Once you’ve finished your test drive, have a look for leaks around the engine bay and underneath the car.

Unlike some other unscrupulous used car dealers, at Day’s Motorpark we take real pride in the service that we provide to our customers and believe that any car on any of our south Wales forecourts will pass the ten point test outlined above.

With this in mind, Day’s Motorpark should be your number one choice - and with branches spread across the whole of South Wales, in Haverfordwest, Garngoch, Plasmarl, Neath and Cardiff, you are never too far away from us and your perfect used car!
